ATHLETICS: Tina set for Challenge; ATHLETICS INDOOR: Commonwealth Games preparation begins.

NATIONAL steeplechase champion Tina Brown begins track preparation for the Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated  with a double appearance for holders Birmingham in the Indoor City Challenge on Sunday.

The 29-year-old from Solihull runs the 1500, for which she has a best of 4:16.42, and in the medley relay in the first round of the competition at Sportcity, Manchester.

Manager Lyn Orbell has been able to name a strong women's team even though she lost heptathlete Julie Hollman Julie Hollman (born 31 March 1982 in Peterborough) is an English heptathlete.

She finished fifth at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, fourteenth at the 2003 World Championships and sixth at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The men's team has been hit by other claims. Former indoor world 400m champion Daniel Caines is involved in the international in Glasgow and Mark Lewis-Francis is leaving for nine weeks in the Australian sun, taking in the Commonwealth Games in March.

There is a doubt about long jumper Leigh Smith, who might be called up for the Glasgow match, but Ryan James is an excellent replacement, capable of registering a victory. It is always useful to have a high-class decathlete de·cath·lete
