ATHLETICS: Godiva duo lift track awards.


COVENTRY GODIVA sprinters Phil Kerry and Karen Oughton scooped the awards for the best track performances in the National Junior League match at Nuneaton with sparkling wins over 100 metres.

Both ran personal bests - Kerry clocking 10.8 seconds and Oughton 11.9 - before going on to add wins over 200 and 400 metres.

Holidays and other commitments affected the Godiva squad for the Trent Division match, but there were a number of individual highlights as the men finished sixth overall of the eight competing teams and the women seventh, only two points behind fifth-placed Royal Sutton.

Sam Montague, 17, produced three personal bests for a win treble in the long jump (6.22), triple jump (12.54) and javelin (39.84) as well as running an excellent leg in the 4 x 400 metres relay to underline his decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events.  potential.

Going into the women's high jump with a personal best of 1.53 metres, Fiona Wright had first time clearances at 1.45, 1.50 and 1.55 before going over 1.60 to win the competition. There was a winning sprint double from Emma Bailey in the 100 (12.9) and 200m (26.1).

COVENTRY Godiva's Steve Arnold led from gun to tape to win the Midland 10,000 metres track race walking title at Tamworth. Arnold powered home in 51-38.14 with clubmate Glyn Jones timed at 63-58.92.

Mark O'Kane (12-11.32) won the boys 2,000 metres, and there was a third title for Godiva in the girls 1,000 m where Enya Tabram (6-32.02) was followed home by Joleen Yeomans (6-38.31) to give the club a one-two after a ding-dong battle.
