ATHLETICS: Blackpool beaten as survival hopes rise.

ABI BRIDGEMAN made a vital contribution to Southport Waterloo's escape from relegation by competing in the 100m and 1500m at Sports City The Sports City is a sporting complex located in the Al Waab district of Doha, Qatar which contains several sporting venues, mostly constructed in preparation for the 2006 Asian Games.  on Sunday only hours after earning a place in the Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe. The country is often referred to simply as Britain.  under-15s triathlon team at Salford Quays the same morning.

The Sandgrounders needed to beat Blackpool to stay up and with wins from Rachael Everett (discus), Kim Edgerton (300m), Eleanor Newton (high jump), Adam Davies and Adam Martland (shot and discus) among others finished 50 points clear of their seaside rivals to remain in the top flight.

 and West Cheshire will be amongst the clubs promoted to the Premier Division, West Cheshire clinching the title with an easy win at Trafford to go up as champions and LPS unexpectedly beating both Warrington and Bolton/Horwich at Wrexham. Danny Higham (400m) and Jessica Bolton (800) won Athlete of the Match awards.

Jessica Cretu (St Helens-Sutton) also gained an Athlete of the Match award, the triple jump being one of three victories for the Saints' pentathlete pen·tath·lete

. Luke James and Sophie Rigby both high jumped 1.44m but were ineligible for the award and Thaddeus Anim-Somuah recorded the same time as the home club's winner in the 100m but the track judges awarded the verdict to the Stockport athlete.

Saints finished second and secured their position in division one for next season.

Liverpool are in the National final after winning the final match where they will be joined by Gateshead who pushed Sale and Leeds into the Auxiliary event. Louis Forbes (800), Daniel Keeling (shot), Katrina Thompson (high jump) and Paul Cummings Paul R. Cummings, (5 September 1953 – 17 September 2001), was a world-class runner who held both American and World records from the mile to the Marathon. His ability to have a middle distance runner's kick and also have the stamina to compete in distances up to the Marathon  (1500 steeplechase) were among the winners for the Wavertree club.

107 votes were cast in the elections for the inaugural North West Regional Council. Macclesfield's Bob Lynch (23 votes), Charles Gains (LPS - 20), Matt Barnes (Altrincham -13) and Ron McAndrew (Blackpool -12) were elected with the final two places going to Preston's Bob Welfare and Sean O'Donnell (Bolton). Liverpool's Arwel Williams and Mike Dooling received seven and four votes respectively.

This weekend sees the Northern Inter-Counties event at Gateshead with local athletes representing Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire.

St Helens-Sutton are the only club contesting the National Cup and Plate competition, travelling to Stoke to take on top class opposition. Although sprinter Steve Moran is unavailable star distance runners Gill Laithwaite and Gemma Connolly are competing.

The club is also involved in a Cheshire League competition being staged by Wirral at Bebington.

Wirral's Norman Waterson has appealed for all visiting clubs to bring as many officials as they can, owing to the clash with the holiday season. In the same League Halton and Frodsham AC stage a meeting at Stanney in Ellesmere Port.

Other events taking place include the Chernobyl Challenge event at Preston and the Pen Y Fan Fell Race at Cwm See Meta Data Coalition.  Llwch near Brecon.
