ATHLETIC TRAINER LEWIS NAMED AVC'S SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE.

LANCASTER - Athletic trainer An athletic trainer is an allied (non-physician) health care provider capable of performing immediate and emergency injury management, injury assessment, and rehabilitation.  Jerry Lewis will spend his 33rd season at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  as the school's scholar in residence.

Lewis, an athletic trainer and physical education instructor at the college since 1971, was selected by his colleagues as AVC's scholar in residence for 2003-04. Bestowed by AVC's Academic Senate, scholar in residence is the college's highest honor for a faculty member.

``It took my breath away,'' Lewis said. ``It's a tremendous honor to be nominated. I never thought it would be me.''

The honor carries with it a stipend of $750. Lewis will also get to showcase his work in a presentation to his colleagues.

Lewis said he hasn't had much time to consider what his presentation would be about. One possibility is a presentation on information people can use in exercising and keeping fit.

Another possibility is a discussion on his work in 1984 as an athletic trainer at the Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests. The Olympics of Ancient Greece

Criteria for the honor include bringing credit to the college, opening insights for students and being acknowledged as a learned individual.

``I can't think of any more deserving person, given the spirt of the award,'' said Brent Carder, dean of the physical education division. ``As far as his expertise in his area, he's certainly one of the most highly regarded in the state among community colleges.''

Lewis was nominated for the honor by Jane Cwayna, women's volleyball coach.

``His volunteer work is extraordinary and so extensive,'' Cwayna said.

Raised in Santa Barbara, Lewis came to Antelope Valley College after graduating from California State University, Fresno The campus sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the San Joaquin Valley. Fresno County is the sixth largest metropolitan area in California. The university is within an hour's drive of many mountain and lake resorts and within a three- or four-hour drive of both Los . Lewis serves as athletic trainer to the college's sports teams and teaches courses in sports medicine sports medicine, branch of medicine concerned with physical fitness and with the treatment and prevention of injuries and other disorders related to sports. Lewis is the college's 21st scholar in residence.
