Students said the driver got out of the vehicle after the crash without saying anything, walked a short distance and sat down.

``He got out like he didn't care and he went and sat down,'' said Julie Dietz, 16.

Dietz said the driver later told her he had lost consciousness before the crash.

``He said he passed out. He said he was coughing a lot,'' Dietz said.

A girl who appeared to be about 8 years old sat in the Jeep crying, students said.

The principal said Friday the school has received telephone calls, letters and cards offering prayers for the injured students and expressing thanks that coaches, faculty and students reacted so calmly and dealt with the situation so quickly.

``One parent said the angels must have been watching over us,'' Paraclete Principal Martha Serrano said. ``We all know how much worse it could have been and I think we're all thankful.''

Paraclete had no classes Friday, but officials said counseling would be available to students Monday.
