ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.

ALLEN MACHUCA Burroughs soccer, sophomore

Burroughs is the only undefeated boys' soccer team in the Foothill League, and its sophomore goalkeeper is a big reason why. Machuca took over as the Burbank school's full-time starter when league started and he enters the week with three shutouts and a 1.2 goals-against average.

Last week, he kept surging Burroughs (7-8-5, 3-0-3) in games against Burbank and Hart. The Indians came from behind to beat Burbank 3-1 on Tuesday and Machuca made nine saves in Friday's 1-1 tie against league-leading Hart to keep Burroughs within one point of Hart in the standings.

The first-year varsity player will miss Friday's game against Canyon to attend a national training camp this weekend.

KATE BECKLER

Alemany basketball, senior

The 5-foot-8 guard has led the Indians to first place midway through their Mission League campaign and continues to put up big numbers with an improved supporting cast.

Beckler had two more big games last week as the Indians, ranked first in the area by the Daily News, improved to 15-4, 4-0.

On Friday, Beckler had 23 points, nine steals and six assists as Alemany built a 34-point lead after three quarters and went on to win 72-46.

Five days before, Alemany traveled to the Bay Area to play Acalanes, the defending Division III

state champion. The Indians lost, but Beckler scored a game-high 32 points.

``It was a good learning experience for us because we haven't had an opportunity to play a game like that before,'' Beckler said.

Alemany faces Flintridge-Sacred Heart in two league games this week, on the road today and at L.A. Baptist on Thursday.

HEAD TO HEAD

Quentin Harvey Cleveland High shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.

Ronald Gray Taft High shooting guard

This is one of the region's biggest City Section games in recent memory, a matchup of the West Valley League's top two teams and an opportunity for some of the best players in the area to showcase their skills.

Harvey, a 6-1 guard, has been invaluable for the Cavaliers (13-6, 4-0), especially over the last few weeks. He's averaging 17 points overall, and Friday he hit seven 3-pointers in a victory over Birmingham. His shooting has been consistent all year, and he's probably Cleveland's best defender. Harvey gives Cleveland a capable scoring threat to complement the Cavaliers' other weapons, namely guard Anthony Davis Anthony Davis can refer to:
  • Anthony Davis (composer) (born 1951), an American composer and jazz pianist.
  • Anthony Davis (running back) (born 1952), an American football running back.
  • Anthony Davis (born 1982), is a running back for Hamilton of the CFL.
. But it's Harvey's defense that will help against Gray, a slashing penetrator who gets points on drives to the basket and from the perimeter. Taft (14-1, 4-0) has an exciting collection of talent, with Gray sharing scoring duties with super freshman Steve Smith and senior center Gregg Guenther Gregg Guenther, Jr. (born January 29, 1982 in Calabasas, CA) is a National Football League tight end for the Cincinnati Bengals. College career
Guenther played basketball and football at the University of Southern California.
. If Gray can give Taft a defensive presence against Harvey, the Toreadors should have enough to win.

Cleveland at Taft boys' basketball

--Analysis: Both teams are undefeated in West Valley play. Cleveland was expected to be in this position, but Taft, led by the play of Greg Gunther, is the surprise of the league and one of the top teams in the region. The winner remains in first, while the other team has to wait until they meet again in the regular-season finale for a second chance.
