The groups collected 600 food items, dozens of toiletry items and about 100 new toys to donate to the Samaritan Center, a local homeless drop-in center, and to Interface Children Family Services, a county-sponsored group that helps families in need. Organizers said the collection was more than they had anticipated this year. The swimmers, ranging in ages from 5 to 18, brought canned vegetables, pasta, soap and toothbrushes for the homeless, and doll houses, race cars and crayons for the children served by Interface. The majority of the donations were set up on several tables near the pool Saturday, physical reminders of what the event was all about. ``With this event, we try to teach the kids that there are other things besides school and swimming,'' said CSA (1) (Canadian Standards Association, Toronto, Ontario, www.csa.ca) A standards-defining organization founded in 1919. But they also said that the Goodwill Challenge gives them a chance to step away from the competition and just have fun in the water. ``Most people want to participate because we don't really get to do things with the whole team,'' Salazar said. ``And most of our workouts are work - this is more fun,'' said her friend, Agoura Hills resident Lauren Borisoff, 16.
