ATHANS JOINS GRANCARE AS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 CULVER CITY, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- M. Scott Athans has joined GranCare Inc. (NYSE: GC) as executive vice president and chief operating officer, it was announced today by Gene E. Burleson, president and chief executive officer of the company.
 "Scott's specific experience in all of GranCare's major business areas adds an important dimension to the company and is integral to our growth plans," Burleson stated.
 "His credibility, people orientation and health care expertise are valuable assets as GranCare moves ahead, building its continuum of care."
 Athans, 47, has more than 20 years of health care management experience, most recently as chief operating officer of a private home health care business based in Atlanta with operations in five states.
 He also served as chief executive officer of Georgia Baptist Medical Center, a major Atlanta medical center comprising three hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, a college of nursing and four medical residency programs. In addition, Athans served as senior vice president and regional director for American Medical International's southeastern region, responsible for 30 hospitals in six states with revenues in excess of $1 billion.
 He has a master's degree in hospital administration from Duke University and a bachelor's degree in economics from Baylor University.
 GranCare operates 83 long-term health care facilities located in California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado, Arizona and South Dakota; institutional pharmacies; home health care operations; and a range of rehabilitation services.
