ATCHISON, TOPEKA AND SANTA FE RAILWAY COMPANY RECEIVES SAFETY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

MIDLAND, Mich., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company is the recipient of The Dow Chemical Company's 18th annual Rail Safety Achievement Award for superior performance in the rail transportation of Dow product in 1992.
The winner was selected from Dow's Class I rail carriers with over 3.0 million Dow rail car miles based on the following criteria:
-- Frequency rate of safety incidents per million Dow rail car miles traveled.
-- Communicating incidents to Dow and/or CHEMTREC (24-hour information service organized by the Chemical Manufacturers Association).
-- A progressive safety program based on car inspection, personnel, training, maintenance of way, regulatory compliance and operating safety.
The Santa Fe Railway was presented the Rail Safety Achievement Award today at a luncheon in Chicago by Enrique Sosa, president, Dow North America. This is the first time the Santa Fe Railway has received the award.
"Winning this award for superior performance in handling Dow shipments in 1992 is a testament to the attention that the Santa Fe Railway places on rail safety -- from your employees throughout the ranks to chairman," Sosa said.
He also stressed the importance of interindustry initiatives such as the TRANSCAER (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response) partnerships, the Interindustry Rail Task Force and Responsible Care.
The railroad was presented with a plaque and a $3,000 scholarship check, which was awarded to John Buell, a Naperville Central High School student and the son of Larry Buell, a Santa Fe operating employee, for use at a recognized college or university of his choice.
In 1992, the Santa Fe Railway safely handled over 13 million Dow rail car miles -- with only one minor incident.
The Santa Fe Railway system lines extend over approximately 7,800 route miles throughout the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nebraska and Louisiana.
