ATCC Offers New Cell Line Resource for Lymphoma Research.

MANASSAS, Va. -- ATCC ATCC American Type Culture Collection, see there  (American Type Culture Collection American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) is a private, not-for-profit biological resource center whose mission focuses on the acquisition, authentication, production, preservation, development and distribution of standard reference microorganisms, cell lines and other materials for ) today announced the availability of the Mantle Cell Lymphoma Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is one of the rarer of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, comprising about 6% of NHL cases.[1] There are only about 15,000 patients presently in the U.S. (The incidence seems to be somewhat higher in Europe.  Cell Bank, a resource of well characterized cell lines aimed at helping to advance mantle cell lymphoma research.

The MCL MCL - Macintosh Common LISP  Cell Bank offers cancer investigators around the world greater access to authenticated cell lines for research use.

"Productive, reproducible and valid research depends on authenticated research materials to provide consistent properties," said Yvonne Reid, PhD, head Cell Biology Cell biology

ATCC operates and manages the MCL Cell Bank under a contract from the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF LRF

), the largest nongovernmental supporter of mantle cell lymphoma research in the world. In 2005, the LRF formed the Mantle Cell Lymphoma Consortium, a network of nearly 90 laboratory and clinical scientists in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  and Europe who share mantle cell lymphoma as their research focus.

The goal of the MCL Consortium is to identify effective and curative treatment strategies for mantle cell lymphoma. The Consortium enables collaboration, sharing of information and laboratory resources, as well as multi-institutional recruitment for clinical trials. The MCL cell bank is part of a wider effort by the consortium to support MCL researchers. It is hoped that research on MCL will lead to effective management of the disease as well as providing insights into the development and treatment of other forms of cancer.

"Establishment of the MCL cell bank at ATCC is an important component of LRF's Mantle Cell Research Initiative and Consortium that is anticipated to markedly increase the pace of research on this important form of cancer," commented Oliver Press, MD, PhD, Chair of LRF's Scientific Advisory Board.

Mantle Cell Lymphoma is a relatively rare, but aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) describes a group of cancers arising from lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. It is distinct from Hodgkin lymphoma in its pathologic features, epidemiology, common sites of involvement, clinical behavior, and treatment.  that affects B lymphocytes from the "mantle" zone of the lymph node lymph node

. It is diagnosed in around 3000 persons annually in the U.S. It usually affects men over the age of 60.
