The women joined the line at noon and expected to stay put until at least 2:30 p.m., when Santa returned from a quick lunch.

Others entered the mall with one goal: get in, get presents, get out.

Adam Rettino said he endured the chaos of the parking lot Tuesday because he had two gifts left to buy. Within 30 minutes, the Valencia resident was clutching a bag from B. Dalton's bookstore and another from Victoria's Secret For the Sonata Arctica single, see Victoria's Secret (song)

``Yeah, I'm kind of a last-minute guy,'' Rettino said. ``But it really didn't take that long, once we found a parking spot. This mall is pretty accessible. I thought it would be more crowded inside.''

Vacant tables were at a premium in the food court, where some of the lines for the eateries challenged those snaking from the cash wraps in many retail stores.

``We're mostly here to see Santa, but I've got a couple more things since we're here,'' said Titner of Canyon Country. ``I had one more gift to buy. And I finally got a tree topper A tree topper is a decorative star, angel or other item which is placed on the crown of a Christmas tree. The most popular tree topper is the angel, followed by the star. If viewed in a Christian context, the tree topper usually signifies the Christmas Star (Star of Bethlehem) or . But I have to say, this year hasn't been too bad with the crowds. I've seen worse.''

More and more, Titner said, she has relied on the Internet for holiday shopping, largely to avoid the masses who flood the shops during the holiday season.
