AT STATE AND IN CONTENTION; DESERT CHRISTIAN EXPECTING A TOP-FLIGHT FINISH.

This has been the year the Desert Christian High boys' cross country team has been waiting for.

The Knights will make their third consecutive appearance in the state Division V final Saturday at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. It is open to the public daily.  in Fresno. This year's meet, however, marks the first season where Desert Christian figures to have an impact in the team competition.

Flintridge Prep is the state's top-ranked team and defending state champion. Desert Christian, the eight-time High Desert League champion, finished sixth in 1997 and eighth last season.

``We expect to compete for the top couple of places this year,'' junior Dan Miller said. ``We have a lot more talent and maturity. We're running a lot faster.''

That was evident in the Southern Section finals last Saturday. Senior Zach Schroeder finished in 16:02 to finish sixth, the highest finish ever by a Desert Christian boys' runner. The senior also knocked 17 seconds off his previous school record on the hilly, 3-mile Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Miller chopped 18 seconds off his lifetime best to power Desert Christian to a team record of 84:53, nearly a minute off their previous season best of 85:52. The Knights finished only a point away from runner-up Downey Calvary Chapel, 100-101. Flintridge Prep, the state's top team in the Stanford and Mt. SAC invitationals, won with 65 points.

``We've been looking forward to this season for quite some time,'' Rogers said. ``This is the most phenomenal team we have ever fielded. In previous years, we were happy to make it to state. This year, we're confident we can finish among the top two.''
