AT MOORPARK, TWO RBS ARE BETTER THAN JUST ONE SCOTT, MORAN ARE BOTH TOP THREATS.

Byline: Sean Ceglinsky Staff Writer

Quarterback controversies are relatively common in football. Moorpark High doesn't have such a problem, though a running-back quandary could develop in the near future.

but suffered an injury. Senior Dan Moran stepped in and might have won the job, or at least earned consideration for the job.

``It's a week-to-week deal,'' Moorpark coach Tim Lins said.

Both have proven capable. Moran, however, has been impressive lately while Scott continues to recover from a high ankle sprain ankle sprain Orthopedics A stretching of the ankle ligaments and/or muscles with swelling  suffered in Week 6.

Moran, 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, has totaled 511 yards rushing and four touchdowns in the past three games, a far cry from the 210 yards he gained over the first five games of the season while he was the primary fullback.

``Dan hasn't missed a beat,'' Lins said. ``He's a tough, hard-nosed football player willing to do whatever he has to for the team.''

Moorpark (5-3, 4-1) is tied for first place with Newbury Park (7-1, 4-1) in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Moran is a significant reason for the Musketeers' success.

It's not as if he was an unknown commodity. He showed glimpses of his big-play potential in Week 5 when he rushed for 78 yards on four carries in a 41-31 victory over Agoura.

Scott went down the following week against Calabasas and Moran finished with 177 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns in the 35-6 victory over the Coyotes.

The breakout game followed, and people haven't stopped talking about it. Moran carried the offensive burden, rushing for 228 yards on 38 carries, though the Musketeers lost 23-16 to Newbury Park.

Moran carried the ball 10 times for 106 yards and had a 10-yard touchdown run.

``They have two very good backs,'' Simi Valley coach Todd Borowski said. ``They wear you down. Having both of them in the backfield, at the same time ... you know one of them is going to get quality yards.''

Lins is happy to have that kind of problem. Moorpark is one of the top three rushing teams in the area, averaging more than 261 yards per game.

Scott has gained 1,051 yards on 145 carries, a 7.2 average, and scored 12 times. Moran has been equally impressive, totaling 721 yards on 93 attempts, a 7.8 average, with eight touchdowns.

There's no clear-cut favorite for the featured back role at this point.
