AT L.A. FASHION WEEK ... SPRING IS IN THE AIR.Byline: LYNDSEY SAUL >LA.COM (1) (Computer Output Microfilm) Creating microfilm or microfiche from the computer. Never mind what the weather might suggest, it's definitely fall in L.A. How can you tell? The spring fashions are being unveiled. One of the hottest places to check out the new styles is Smashbox Studios in Culver City Culver City, city (1990 pop. 38,793), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1917. It is a center of the U.S. motion-picture industry, whose roots in the city date to c.1915. Its chief manufactures are rubber products and computers. , where Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week opened Sunday and will run through Thursday. Spring 2008 collections from 34 designers will be shown during the length of the run. Up until a few years ago, Fashion Week in L.A. was marked by a cluster of shows, including those held simultaneously by the IMG IMG International medical graduate, see there entertainment company -- producers of New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of City's higher-profile Bryant Park Bryant Park is a 9.603 acre (39,000 m²) public park located in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is bounded by Fifth Avenue, Sixth Avenue, 40th Street and 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan.[1] The central building of the New York Public Library is in the park. fashion week -- and Smashbox Cosmetics' top executives, Dean and Davis Factor, great-grandsons of makeup mogul Max Factor. But IMG and the Factors had high hopes of bringing legitimacy to L.A. fashion and opted to join forces four years ago rather than compete. "Smashbox and IMG had two great events in two different locations," said Davis Factor, via e-mail. "We saw a lot of potential in merging the two and realized that we could make one event that would have a strong lineup and be easier for our guests to attend." Thus, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios was born. However, its status as a powerhouse may not be so secure. Though IMG has said this year's lineup of designers -- including Nicky Hilton
Louis Verdad (the very name that brought enormous credibility to L.A.'s fashion rep with the appearance of Anna Wintour Anna Wintour (born November 3, 1949, in London) is the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, a position she has held since 1988. The Garment District started out as an offshoot of Harbor Textiles, a textile company which produced wiping cloths for industry that began in the late 1940s. . The show, "Have Faith in L.A.," is in its second season, but unlike Fashion Week at Smashbox, it doesn't charge its featured designers to appear, BOXeight producer Sarah Shewey told the Associated Press Associated Press: see news agency. Associated Press (AP) Cooperative news agency, the oldest and largest in the U.S. and long the largest in the world. . "People want to see fashion as art, and there's no glamour in sitting underneath a tent," Shewey told the Associated Press, in reference to the Smashbox affair. "Downtown, you have wonderful architecture around you." And L.A. competition aside, many of the city's biggest-name designers still end up showing in New York -- where fashion week was held in early September -- rather than stay closer to home. That includes industry darlings Rodarte, Jenni Kayne and now Cynthia Vincent, who followed suit last season. However, some designers -- including Kevan Hall, who has shown at Smashbox since year one -- still say the benefits of showing in L.A. outweigh the prestige of Bryant Park. "Sure I'd show in New York, I probably still will, but honestly, L.A. is where the celebrities are, and a lot of my clients happen to be celebrities, so it makes sense for business to continue to show here." Regardless of the split sentiment among industry insiders, the Factors aren't worried. "It has really grown into a premier fashion event," said Davis Factor. "We are still growing and picking up steam. We feel that as L.A. grows and becomes stronger, more designers will want to stay and show here." Along with showcasing the coming trends for spring, the Factors have incorporated another trend into the production of this year's shows: eco-consciousness. They've constructed the show accordingly, booking several designers who use sustainable fabrics as well as making physical adjustments to the venue. "We wanted to go green to raise awareness," Davis Factor said. "We will be carbon off-setting the entire event; many of the materials have changed to recycled materials. Smashbox Cosmetics has even created a green collection that is biodegradable and supports tree growth around the world. "We hope that when you leave our event, you think twice before you do something that would damage the environment further, and we hope to continue with the green initiatives in seasons to come," he said. OK, so L.A.'s fashion week is still a little green. But at least this year, it's by choice.
