EDINBURGH and Scotland centre Matt Dey has been forced to quit rugby after failing to recover from a shoulder injury.

The 28-year-old, who toured Australia with the Test squad and played for Scotland A, said: "It was pretty devastating to be told I couldn't play again but there comes a time when you have to weigh up everything.

"The biggest highlights of my career were signing my first contract, going on the Scotland tour to Australia in 2004 and helping the team finish fourth in the Magners League in 2008.

"I also enjoyed playing for Scotland A when we beat the England Saxons The England Saxons are the second national rugby union team behind the English national side. Todd beat Japan's Yoko Goda 4-7 10-5 4-2 then got the better of Jane Rigby of Zimbabwe 10-5 9-7.

Hogg said "I'm delighted to get past Ireland and Australia. They are two of the strongest competitors in my section so to beat both of them, particularly on the opening day, was really good".

CRICKET: Scotland bowler Dewald Nel is set to make his comeback from injury for Greenock in the crucial SNCL SNCL Smile Now, Cry Later  Premier clash with Aberdeenshire on Saturday.

Greenock president David Campbell said: "Dewald's initial aim will be to prove his fitness for Scotland's Intercontinental Cup clash with Ireland at Mannofield.

TENNIS: St Andrews player Morven McCulloch lost 6-1 6-3 to Spain's Silvia GarciaJimenez in the last 16 of the European Youth Olympic Fesival in Tampere, Finland yesterday.

ATHLETICS: Scots Jenny Tan, Beth Potter and Nicola Hood are in action on the opening day of the European Junior Championships in Serbia today.

Dundee's Tan runs in the 800m heats, while Victoria Park's Potter and Hood go in the 3000m and 3000m steeplechase qualifiers.

HOCKEY: Scotland coach Jon Royce has selected Olympian Graham Moodie for the upcoming European Nations Trophy to be held in Wrexham despite nagging hamstring problems that have kept him out of the build-up matches.

That means there is no place for Azzurri Kelburne striker Jonny Christie in the 18-man squad.
