AT Comm selected by Maine Turnpike Authority electronic toll and traffic management system; An integral part in saving toll authority $5 million per year.

MARBLEHEAD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1996--AT/Comm Inc., a leading provider of intelligent, radio frequency-based devices and systems, today announced it is installing a fully integrated electronic toll and traffic management system on the Maine Turnpike The Maine Turnpike runs from Kittery to Augusta and is a toll road for all of its length except for a short section in Kittery and York. As of January 2004, it is signed entirely as Interstate 95.  tollway. Featuring express lanes for people participating in the program, the cashless system eliminates the need for motorists to wait in long lines In communications, circuits that are capable of handling transmissions over long distances.  while paying tolls.

"AT/Comm's technology is an integral part of a new barrier toll collection system that will allow us to save $5 million every year in operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales ," said Paul Violette, executive director, Maine Turnpike Authority.  our infrastructure without increasing tolls. Our customers, both private and commercial, will experience greater efficiency and convenience."

The Maine Turnpike will install the system on more than 100 miles of Interstate 95, running from York to Augusta, ME. Approximately 122 toll lanes will be updated with the new system and more than 60,000 transponders will be available to motorists who frequently travel the highway.

AT/Comm's Smart Transponder, a versatile alpha numeric display device with two-way transmit capabilities, is featured in the system. The transponder, about the size of a radar detector This article or section may deal primarily with the U.S. and may not present a worldwide view. , is placed on the dashboard of a car or truck. Motorists will establish accounts with the Maine Turnpike Authority and the dollar amount deposited in the account will automatically be entered in the memory of the transponder. When approaching a toll plaza, antennas identify vehicles participating in the program, trigger the device and automatically debit the toll amount. The transponder displays the amount paid and produces an account balance. The device stores the payment history in its memory, making it ideal for commercial vehicles requiring receipts. A transponder holds multiple accounts allowing one device to serve many different toll authorities. In the future, motorists will benefit from a transponder that performs related applications, including parking lot access and road condition warnings.

"The Maine Turnpike Authority is joining a growing list of innovative organizations implementing intelligent, radio frequency-based technology for toll collection purposes," said Richard Harrison There are several people named Richard Harrison.
