AT&T to make the Internet as valuable and easy to use as phone service.

BASKING RIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 1995--AT&T today announced plans to provide its 90 million business and consumer customers with unprecedented access to the people, information and services they want by making the worldwide Internet of computer networks and other online services as universally available, and as easy to use, as telephone service.

"We intend to take the Internet from the realm of the cyberspace pioneers to the world of everyday use," said Alex Mandl, executive vice president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of AT&T's Communications Services Group.

AT&T said it has created three new businesses charged with making it easier for individuals and companies to get on the Internet and for businesses there to interact with their customers more securely and efficiently.

AT&T WorldNet (SM) Services, headed by vice president Tom Evslin, will make the Internet uniquely useful to individuals and businesses and easily accessible whether they are at home, in the office, or on the road. AT&T WorldNet Services will give customers superior, easy-to-use dial-up and dedicated Internet access See how to access the Internet.  with powerful navigational tools and information directories.

Hosting and Transactions Services, headed by vice president Kathleen Earley, will provide businesses with a range of services to help them reach more customers, promote their products, publish electronic catalogs and handle secure sales transactions through the Internet. Ultimately, this will make the emerging industry of electronic commerce as vibrant and broadly accepted as toll-free 800 services are today.

"AT&T has the computer networks and technological know-how to build electronic storefronts on the Internet," said Mandl. "Now we've organized these assets into a business that can help even our smallest customers put an electronic version of their sales catalog on the Internet and make it secure and interactive."

A new content services business is already working with content owners to provide tailored information and entertainment services to consumers, professionals and businesses. AT&T will also package content within broad interest areas to give content providers the widest possible audience for their services. Caroline Vanderlip, vice president of Content Services, and Michael Kolowich Michael Edmund Kolowich (born August 28, 1952) is a documentary filmmaker and executive producer of DigiNovations, a multimedia production company which he founded in Concord, Massachusetts, in 2001. , president of AT&T Interchange Online Network, will each lead content services initiatives.

AT&T WORLDNET SERVICES

The Internet Service Provider (ISP)

AT&T WorldNet Services are designed to be especially user-friendly to reach a very broad customer base, including many people who have never tried an online service or are very new to the Internet. For existing Internet users, AT&T WorldNet Services will work with most of today's popular Internet browsers.

The services will feature the same world-class care that customers have come to expect from AT&T. Customers of other AT&T services will be eligible for special pricing on AT&T WorldNet Services.

Technical trials of AT&T WorldNet dial-up service will begin within 60 days. More extensive customer trials will quickly follow, with expansion to full service availability in a regional rollout.

across-the-board convenience and utility. To meet this need, AT&T is working with several industry leaders who will help AT&T provide its customers with powerful tools and capabilities tailored to a variety of essential tasks.

Because the Internet is populated with information produced by a wide variety of software systems, viewing and printing information, once it's been accessed, is sometimes problematic. AT&T is teaming up with Adobe to address this issue.

Adobe Systems Incorporated

Adobe Systems Incorporated, founded in 1982 and located in Mountain View, CA, develops, markets and supports computer software products and technologies that enable users to create, display, print and publish electronic documents.

AT&T WORLDNET Services will incorporate Adobe's industry-leading Acrobat technology, which enables users to view a document in its original form, regardless of which software programs and/or computers were used in its creation.

AT&T's business customers are eager for Internet access, but they need it provided reliably and safely. AT&T's solution is to work with BBN Planet to provide dedicated, managed Internet connections for business.

BBN Planet

BBN Planet Corporation, a subsidiary of Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc., provides managed Internet access and value-added services to leading companies and educational, medical and research institutions nationwide. This year BBN is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its development of the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency NETwork) The research network funded by the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The McKinley Group

The McKinley Group, located in Sausalito, CA, was founded in 1993 by a team of international publishers, technologists and information specialists to deliver the most comprehensive and effective navigational and informational tool for the Internet. "The McKinley," the company's innovative on-line Internet directory service, currently offers users a description or abstract of more than 80,000 sites, with 20,000 of these sites fully reviewed and rated by McKinley's team of expert writers and advisory boards. The purpose of "The McKinley" is to eliminate user frustration by providing Internet users a descriptive preview of their chosen sites, allowing them to make educated decisions on which sites they wish to access.

AT&T WorldNet Service will use The McKinley database, both as a standalone, fully searchable directory and as a directory of pre-defined subject categories which will be determined by AT&T. The McKinley is unique in that it rates, reviews and describes sites, providing users with a qualified, systematic rating system that saves a significant amount of time in the process.

Verity Inc.

Verity Inc., founded in 1988 and located in Mountain View, Ca., develops and markets the Topic family of search and retrieval software for the enterprise and the Internet. The company pioneered concept retrieval and query-by-topic, making it easier for individuals and enterprises to filter, search, retrieve and analyze information from disparate sources. Today, Verity is the market leader in text retrieval, with over 650 corporate and government customers and more than 2 million topic users worldwide.

AT&T WorldNet Service will incorporate the Verity Topic search and agent technology to provide its customers with two valuable tools: powerful full-text search capabilities and the ability to create personal information agents that can filter and select relevant information sources for the customer. Due to massive amounts of data migrating from disparate sources onto the Internet and on-line services, information management is becoming one of the key enabling technologies on the information superhighway. In working with Verity, the AT&T WolrdNet Service will enable millions of casual computer users to use the full resources of the internet quickly and easily.

The AT&T approach is built on open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced . For example, while AT&T WorldNet (SM) Services will support most of the leading browsers for customers, AT&T can also provide a pre-configured robust browser through a relationship with the leading browser provider, one of the best in the industry.
