AT&T first to offer high-speed service to Hong Kong, Taiwan; Growth in regional demand cited.


BASKING RIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1997--Signifying the growing demand for high-capacity digital data services in the Asia-Pacific Region, AT&T has signed memoranda of understanding to provide high-speed international private line service to Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov.  and Taiwan. The agreements mark the first time such service has been offered to these countries from the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

AT&T T45 Service lets multinational businesses send large amounts of digital data at speeds up to 45 million bits per second, the equivalent of transmitting the contents of a set of encyclopedias once every 15 seconds. In addition to bulk transfer of data, typical T45 service applications include CAD/CAM CAD/CAM
 in full computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing.

Integration of design and manufacturing into a system under direct control of digital computers.
, multimedia, video imaging, Internet and LAN-to-LAN interconnection.

AT&T's agreements with Hongkong Telecom International and Chungwa Telecom International Business Group of Taiwan call for the development of service architecture so that proper maintenance, testing, provisioning, service performance and other related issues can be addressed. All parties also agree to provide bilateral technical modifications as necessary and to share management of the international portion of their respective services.

Service will be offered from Hong Kong and Taiwan to selected customer locations in the United States. The first customer in Taiwan, the Institute of Information Industry, will use the service to support the connection of their SEEDNet network to Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

The agreements come within a month of AT&T's inauguration INAUGURATION. This word was applied by the Romans to the ceremony of dedicating some temple, or raising some man to the priesthood, after the augurs had been consulted.
