Personal Online Services is making available a broad range of content, organized into a family of online services that are relevant to consumers' lifestyle and life stage needs. Available in mid-1996, the first consumer content service will be devoted to health and fitness topics. The first content provider to join the health and fitness service is IVI Publishing IVI Publishing is an American-based home computer software company based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota in 1990 as Interactive Television, but later renamed in 1991 as Interactive Ventures, Inc. "AT&T's Personal Online Services will bring people within a mouse-click of timely information, localized for their community, customized to their particular situation and accessible through an intuitive interface," said Caroline Vanderlip. "Personal Online Services will be built on an architecture that is open, pricing that is flexible, presentation that is state-of-the-art and information that is compelling."

Each service will include content from well-known, "marquee" publishers, other high-quality proprietary content and public domain content from the Internet and elsewhere. In addition, content will be regionalized and personalized to meet customers' needs.

The AT&T health and fitness service will help people find information on everything from dieting and nutrition to workouts, yoga, first aid, mental health and the origins, effects and treatments of medical conditions See carpal tunnel syndrome, computer vision syndrome, dry eyes and deep vein thrombosis.  -- plus the names of local, regional and national specialists, support groups, spas, health clubs, pharmacies and other resources.

Petrillo, president of AT&T's business communications services unit and leader of AT&T's emerging presence in the online marketplace. For content providers, Personal Online Services is an opportunity to place their material under the brands in a consumer-friendly Internet environment, while associating with AT&T, a company that has a vast customer base and is a world leader in communications. Content providers will benefit from attractive revenue-sharing arrangements with AT&T, multiple revenue sources and technical expertise to facilitate getting their content online.

For customers, AT&T Personal Online Services will deliver personalized and localized content to meet their immediate needs and interests from a selection of specific, consumer-oriented content categories. The combination of exclusive and generally available content, collected and presented in an easy-to-use service, will make the Internet a more friendly and useable resource.

Customers will connect to Personal Online Services from any online service that offers access to the Internet's World Wide Web, including AT&T WorldNet Service, and be able to use any Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. . In addition to content for individuals and families, content for business and professional markets is available through AT&T New Media Services.

IVI Publishing is a highly respected digital publisher of health-related information with a multimedia platform integrating CD-ROM, online services and cable television. The company creates digital versions of materials from the Mayo Clinic, Time Life and HEALTHNEWS, the New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt.  Journal of Medicine's sister publications.
