AT&T Wireless Services And Nokia Sign $240 Million Contract.


IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1996--Nokia, Europe's largest manufacturer of cellular and wireless phones, today announced it has signed a contract with AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. (AWS AWS Amazon Web Services

), valued at more than $240 million, for dual-band phones.

The three-year agreement calls for Nokia to supply TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A satellite and cellular phone technology that interleaves multiple digital signals onto a single high-speed channel. For cellular, TDMA triples the capacity of the original analog method (FDMA).  (Time Division Multiple Access) dual-band, dual-mode handsets operating in the 800 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  or 1.9 GHz range. The phones will also have a default capability to switch to analog networks when not operating in an AT&T Wireless Digital Network market.

AWS will begin to deploy its new PCS systems operating in the 1.9 GHz band during 1997 and, when combined with their cellular properties, will cover about 80 percent of the U.S. population.
