AT&T Wireless Services, Samsung Electronics and Unwired Planet Announce Wireless Intranet and Internet Access Using Samsung Electronics' New Smart Phone; Samsung Electronics' Duette Includes an Integrated UP.Browser Client and is Compatible with the AT&T PocketNet Service.


LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1996--AT&T, Samsung Electronics Samsung Electronics (SEC, Hangul:삼성전자; KSE: 005930, KSE: 005935, LSE: SMSN, LSE: SMSD) is a South Korean multinational corporation and the world's largest and leading electronics and information technology company.  and Unwired Planet Inc. (UP), today introduced Duette, a next-generation cellular phone that will allow mobile users to instantly access information on the Internet and private intranets.

The phone will incorporate Unwired Planet's UP.Browser to provide users with seamless access to a world of information. The cellular phone is compatible with the AT&T PocketNet Service and supports Cellular Digital Packet Data (communications, protocol) Cellular Digital Packet Data - (CDPD) A wireless standard providing two-way, 19.2 kbps packet data transmission over exisiting cellular telephone channels.  (CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) A low-speed, digital, wireless data network that is an enhancement to an existing analog cellular network. Based on IBM's CelluPlan II, CDPD provides a packet overlay onto the AMPS network and moves data at 19. ), which is also commonly referred to as "wireless IP."

Scheduled for commercial availability in January of 1997, Duette provides integrated voice, two-way messaging, e-mail and wireless access to intranet applications and a growing number of Internet information services See IIS. . By integrating Unwired Planet's UP.Link software platform the phone is compatible with the AT&T PocketNet Phone service.

The UP.Browser embedded in the phone enables it to send and receive text-based information from the Internet and private intranets. With this micro-browser, Samsung Electronics' phone is no larger or heavier than a regular cellular phone but has the capability of wireless connectivity to a variety of information services, at a competitive price.

How It Works

Duette utilizes the UP.Link platform, a ground-breaking open software platform from Unwired Planet.
