AT&T WINS BUSINESS IN INDIA WITH $21 MILLION CONTRACT.


NEW DELHI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1995--India's Department of Telecommunications awarded AT&T a $21 million contract to supply and install the country's first advanced operator services A variety of telephone services that require human intervention, including person-to-person calls, collect calls, credit card billing and directory and dialing assistance. Such services are performed by LECs, IXCs and alternative operator services (AOS), organizations that are used by  system.

The systems will help India's telecommunications department offer new services, and help improve operator efficiency and call-completion rates.

AT&T Network Systems will install the new systems, called Operator Services Position Systems (known in India as Computerized Digital Trunk Manual Exchanges) in 14 cities: Ahmedabad, Bangladore, Bombay, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Ernakulam, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Madras, New Delhi New Delhi (dĕl`ē), city (1991 pop. 294,149), capital of India and of Delhi state, N central India, on the right bank of the Yamuna River. , Patna and Pune.

Installation will begin in mid-1995, and is expected to be completed by early 1996.

Operators will use computer workstations to connect and charge a variety of national and international calls; provide on-demand calling services or book calls for later completion; assist in-country calls; provide information on previously booked calls; and give customers suggestions on how best to control calling costs.

The DOT will also offer a variety of other services, such as emergency service numbers, telemarketing, or automatic stock quote retrieval, by connecting the operators' workstations with external data bases.

). The 5ESS Switches give the DOT the flexibility to deploy operator service centers near its exchanges, or up to 1600 kilometers away from the centers. The system makes it possible for operators to handle up to three calls simultaneously, which helps speed call handling.
