AT&T PRESENTS BACK-TO-SCHOOL TV SPECIAL VIA SATELLITE FROM BELL LABORATORIES

 NEW YORK, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T will present its first-ever back-to-school TV special next week, offering more than 40 million students returning to school this month the opportunity to tune in via satellite to "Live from AT&T Bell Labs."
 The hour-long, noncommercial science and math education program, featuring Bell Labs scientists and engineers, will air Wednesday (Sept. 29).
 It will be broadcast at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. EDT, over Telstar 301 and Satcom K2 satellites. Many PBS stations are expected to carry the broadcast later this fall.
 "America's future in science, math and engineering rests with students, many of whom are in 5th to 12th grade classrooms," said Arno Penzias, Nobel laureate in physics and vice president of research at AT&T Bell Labs.
 "If we can't interest them in science and technology, we will be a poorer nation -- intellectually and economically -- in a decade," said Penzias.
 For three years, Penzias and other scientists at AT&T Bell Labs, the nation's pre-eminent industrial research laboratory, have welcomed students via television to Bell Labs during National Science and Technology Week, in the spring.
 "Students starting a new school year can see how what they're learning is actually used in laboratories across America," Penzias said. "Above all, we want to build on the strength of America's classrooms."
 The Sept. 29 broadcast, co-hosted by Penzias and David Heil, host of PBS's "Newton's Apple" science series, will include features, demonstrations and activities involving students from Dallas; Minneapolis; Parma, Ohio; and Wellesley, Mass.
 Other participants include Nobel laureate Leon Lederman, Hans von Baeyer, professor of physics at the College of William and Mary, and Arlie Petters, professor of mathematics at Princeton University.
 The program will include a segment on the 24th International Physics Olympiad, held for the first time in the United States this summer. The Olympiad was sponsored in the U.S. by the American Institute of Physics.
 Bell Labs research director Greg Blonder and researcher Marcia Grabow will team up with students to get a first-hand look at the experimental nature of physics research. One of their challenges will be to measure the size of the earth, using a 2,000-year-old method employed by early astronomers.
 Students will visit Scotland and Japan to explore solitons -- waves that maintain their shape over long distances -- which were first observed as water waves in a Scottish canal in 1834. By the year 2000, solitons comprised of light pulses will move voice, data and images around the world at the speed of light.
 Penn & Teller, well-known pranksters and humorists, will explore chemistry and physics in two demonstrations involving cookies and ice cream.
 Martha Quinn, former MTV vee-jay, is tempted to sit on a bed of nails "just for science," she says.
 The broadcast will also cover a White House visit by Bell Labs engineers and students from Science High School in Newark, N.J., who were honored by President Clinton for winning the Chairman's Award at this year's U.S. First Competition.

 transponder 14 vertical, 12112.5 MHz.
 -- Audio: Mono on 5.65, 6.2 and 6.8 MHz.
