AT&T NAMES HP's UHLMAN TO HEAD CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT.NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1995-- AT&T has named Thomas M. Uhlman vice president for corporate development, effective June 1. Uhlman, 48, will succeed Blaine E. Davis, who is retiring at the end of May. Uhlman, director of corporate development at Hewlett Packard Company in Palo Alto, Calif., since 1985, will be responsible for providing merger and acquisition support for AT&T's business units and for identifying nontraditional business development opportunities for AT&T units worldwide. During his last five years at Hewlett-Packard, Uhlman completed 20 acquisitions, concluded 30 joint ventures or minority interests, and negotiated 15 strategic alliances in Asia-Pacific, Europe and the U.S. In 1983-84 he was project director for the President's Commission on Industrial Competitiveness, and in 1981-82 he was director of productivity improvement at the U.S. Department of Education. Uhlman holds a B.A. in political science from the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y., a master's degree in management from Stanford University in Palo Alto, and a doctorate in political science from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. Davis, vice president for strategic business development since 1985, is retiring after 30 years at AT&T. Davis, 59, began his AT&T career in 1964 as a member of technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J. In 1980 he was named head of strategic planning at AT&T International, where he helped the company begin globalizing its service, product and equipment businesses, which now account for 25 percent of AT&T's revenue. In his current assignment, Davis played key roles in AT&T's merger negotiations with NCR Corporation, Teradata, and McCaw Cellular Communications.
