AT&T MICROELECTRONICS TO LICENSE MULTI-TECH DSVD MODEM TECHNOLOGY.

MOUNDS VIEW, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 20, 1995--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., today announced that AT&T MicroElectronics (AT&T ME) division has signed a Memorandum of Understanding A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is a legal document describing a bilateral or multilateral agreement between parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action and may not imply a legal commitment.  (MOU (Minutes Of Usage) A metric used to compute billing and/or statistics for telephone calls or other network use. ) for using Multi-Tech's DSVD (Digital Simultaneous Voice and Data) An all-digital technology for concurrent voice and data (SVD) transmission over a single analog telephone line. The DSVD V.  technology in its digital simultaneous voice and data (communications) Digital Simultaneous Voice and Data - (DSVD) A technique supported by some modems for multiplexing compressed speech with digital data for transmission over a normal telephone line.  (DSVD) modem Catamaran(TM) chip sets. A Digital SVD modem allows a user to talk with a colleague on the other end of a modem link while data communications are in progress. The alternative would be to make a second phone call to the remote location, which can be expensive for long distance calls or even impossible in certain circumstances. The uses for simultaneous voice and data See SVD.  are becoming well documented and include the technical support of remote users, distant learning in rural areas, telecommuting, and most recently, videoconferencing.

``The MOU is the first step in licensing AT&T ME to use our patent-pending Simultaneous Voice and Data technology in their Catamaran chip sets. They will also be able to pass their license rights on to Catamaran chip set customers,'' said Raghu Sharma, President of Multi-Tech. ``Multi-Tech, the pioneer in simultaneous voice and data modem technology, shipped the world's first simultaneous voice and data modem in 1993. We believe that within the next year the majority of high-end modems sold will include simultaneous voice and data capabilities, and that it will usher in a new level of productivity for telecommunications.''

This technology is covered in over 17 pending patents that Multi-Tech has filed in the U.S., as well as a number of international patent applications. Multi-Tech first demonstrated its simultaneous voice and data technology in the fall of 1992 at Comdex in Las Vegas. Since then it has implemented the technology in several models, including the four currently shipping, which include:

Model MT1932PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1. , a 19.2K bps V.32terbo external modem that adds

voice processing via its ``Talk Anytime'' Digital SVD feature.

TalkAnytime is a hardware feature that is independent of software,

and will work with any communications software running on any

computer. Electronically, the MultiModemPCS includes a DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  for

digitizing and processing voice, circuitry for transmitting voice

and data simultaneously, a voice-quality speaker, and a built-in

microphone. The product is also available for Macintosh

computers.

Model MT2834PCS, a 28.8K bps V.34 version that supports the use

of a standard telephone interface for TalkAnytime interface. Also

available are a Macintosh(R) version and a version that bundles a

single-port serial accelerator card to handle 115.2K bps data

rates.

Model MT2834PCS/c, an internal ISA-bus 28.8K bps version that

also supports a standard telephone interface.

For additional information concerning Multi-Tech's SVD (Simultaneous Voice and Data) The concurrent transmission of voice and data by modem over a single analog telephone line. The first SVD technologies on the market were Multi-Tech's MSP, Radish's VoiceView, AT&T's VoiceSpan and the all-digital DSVD, endorsed by  technology licensing program send a written request to:
