AT&T Launches First National One-Rate Wireless Service Plan; Exclusive Nationwide Availability of New Nokia Phones With 200-Hour Battery.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 1998--AT&T today announced the first national one-rate wireless service price plan. The plan, AT&T Digital One Rate, available now, provides customers a single, all-inclusive rate for incoming or outgoing calls anytime, anywhere in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. "AT&T is dead-set on using our technology to stimulate top-line growth," said C. Michael Armstrong C Michael Armstong (born 18 October, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan) is the former AT&T chairman and CEO, who tried to reestablish AT&T as an end-to-end carrier. Unfortunately, due to the dot.com bust and various other issues, he was forced to break the group up in 2001. , AT&T chairman. "We have again set the pace for the nation's wireless industry by dramatically simplifying wireless price plans in a way that is sure to stimulate wireless usage."

Armstrong said that AT&T's new price plan removes any uncertainty and concerns customers might have about large, surprise charges on their wireless bills, by offering flat fees for a set amount of minutes monthly.

AT&T noted that wireless carriers traditionally offer calling plans with a monthly access charge. Subscribers also typically pay separate long-distance charges for inbound in·bound 1

"With AT&T Digital One Rate every call our customers make and receive is priced like a local call," said Armstrong. "That's unparalleled freedom in wireless calling in this country."

AT&T Digital One Rate is offered on three monthly calling plans, priced as follows: 600 minutes of monthly air time for $89.99; 1,000 minutes of monthly air time for $119.99; and 1,400 minutes of monthly air time for $149.99. Additional minutes are billed at a flat rate of $.25 per minute.

These plans are available immediately and require the use of a Digital multi-network phone. Digital multi-network phones also operate with other wireless carriers' digital and analog networks and, therefore, are capable of providing service to subscribers almost anywhere in North America. The combination of AT&T's vast digital wireless network and the multi-network capabilities of the phones make AT&T Wireless the only company that can offer customers such simple and flexible wireless service pricing nationwide.

AT&T also announced today an exclusive agreement with Nokia Nokia (nō`kēä), town (1996 pop. 26,326), Western Finland prov., SW Finland, on Lake Näsijärvi. "This is an unprecedented offer for wireless consumers," said Dan Hesse Hesse (hĕs, hēs`ē, hĕs`ə), Ger. Hessen, state (1994 pop. 5,800,000), 8,150 sq mi (24,604 sq km), central Germany. "Combining the largest digital wireless network in North America with a service plan that eliminates long-distance and roaming charges in all 50 United States - all through a lightweight, feature-rich, Digital multi-network phone that can be left on for days - enables AT&T to provide customers with a new, unmatched level of freedom.

"Our customers won't be surprised by a battery that wears down quickly or by losing service when they travel from a digital to an analog network," said Hesse.

Armstrong added, "The launch of AT&T Digital One Rate is in keeping with AT&T's commitment to give customers what they want: simplicity, practical solutions and value for their money.

"We think our new pricing plan and the Nokia phones offer our customers simplicity and cost effectiveness and will expand the ways consumers use wireless," Armstrong said, echoing remarks he made when he announced in January that AT&T planned to offer new multi-network phones. "We are giving our customers an important new alternative for all of their communications needs."
