AT&T LAUNCHES GLOBAL OLYMPIC NETWORK.

ATLANTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 30, 1996--AT&T, a Centennial Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests. The Olympics of Ancient Greece

Partner, today launched service on the AT&T Global Olympic Network, the first official Olympic long distance telecommunications network A telecommunications network is a of telecommunications links and nodes arranged so that messages may be passed from one part of the network to another over multiple links and through various nodes. .

Using AT&T OneNet Service, the network serves official members of the Olympic Family. It provides global customized communications services including long distance calling and sophisticated high-speed data communications data communications, application of telecommunications technology to the problem of transmitting data, especially to, from, or between computers. In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  to the International Olympic Committee “IOC” redirects here. AT&T also announced closer ties with the IOC, the coordinating body of the worldwide Olympic movement. AT&T is now the official telecommunications consultant to the IOC and the organization's official international long distance supplier.

"The International Olympic Committee is a lean operation with a global reach," said Thierry Sprunger, IOC Management and Operations Director. "Thanks to the AT&T Global Olympic Network, the telecommunications needs of the IOC and the Olympic Movement are managed in an efficient, cost-effective way. We are proud to have AT&T as our global telecommunications partner."

AT&T's OneNet Service is already in place with ACOG as lead customer, providing outgoing long distance, incoming toll-free calling, teleconferencing, and switched digital service for data and image-intensive transmission, all customized for ACOG and the Olympic Family. During the 1996 Games, other users will take advantage of the service.

Sprunger emphasized the geographic range of the Olympic Family. "We are in constant communication with four Olympic Games organizing committees on three different continents, with more than 40 International Sports Federations and 197 NOCs around the world. And our press relations department is in touch with thousands of journalists and press agencies everywhere."

In effect, AT&T has created a one-of-a-kind multinational network designed to grow steadily over the next months, serve at extraordinary volumes for 17 days this summer, and then vanish--but not completely. An important heritage for future Games will be provided by AT&T's highly acclaimed Billing Edge Desktop Analysis Software, which captures on CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

all aspects of network configuration and usage.

Using Billing Edge CD-ROMs from the Atlanta Games, planners for future Olympic Games set for Nagano, Japan, Sydney, Australia, and Salt Lake City can review calling patterns, reproduce full-color graphs and maps, model hypothetical calling patterns, and create the future out of the past.

"Like any multinational enterprise, the Olympic Committees need to be able to work quickly and easily together across oceans and time zones," said Glenn Starr, AT&T director of global services. "AT&T OneNet delivers the reliable, integrated connectivity they need, plus the power to provision, manage, and expand the network as their needs change."

Earlier Olympic Games had no unified network. Combinations of international private lines were often patched together through negotiation with several providers, and advanced applications were expensive. Now for the first time, the Olympic Movement will have an official "virtual private network," with one-stop provisioning, centralized management, and connectivity to high tech applications at Games time.

For example, AT&T's Enhanced Fax Service is set up now to broadcast faxes to many locations at once, domestic and international. The service has already been hard at work for ACOG sending news releases to more than 1,600 media outlets, coordinating plans for the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay across the U.S., and selling commemorative license plates in 159 Georgia counties.

journalists use AT&T's Global Switched Digital Service for high-speed international transmission of competition photos from the Main Press Center in Atlanta. Plans are also underway to use AT&T's WorldWorx Service to let Games planners in widely scattered locations collaborate electronically on drawings, maps, and schedules.

AT&T's OneNet uses processing capabilities in AT&T's Worldwide Intelligent Network to create a "virtual" network that acts like a dedicated network, providing a customized private configuration for an organization's voice and data needs. OneNet can also be used for electronic messaging See e-mail and messaging system. , voice mail, and high speed data access that connects to frame relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  services, as well as other options.

Other features include toll-fraud protection, reliability guarantees, and sophisticated network management operations that let customers track calls, define network configuration, and monitor costs.
