AT&T High Seas Radiotelephone Service provides lifesaving communication.

In maritime law, the waters lying outside the territorial waters of any and all states. In the Middle Ages, a number of maritime states asserted sovereignty over large portions of the high seas.
 Radiotelephone Facility - WOM WOM - write-only memory , the only facility of its kind in the world, provide lifesaving, two way voice communication between ships at sea, or aircraft, and telephones on land, sea, or in the air.

Staffed 24-hours a day, 365-days per year, AT&T operators provide mainland telephone connection. In many circumstances, operators handle distress calls. The operations staff is trained for all emergency situations and alerts the Coast Guard of pending crises.

Recently, Langley and his staff assisted a caller whose 44-foot sailing vessel began to sink off the coast of Aruba. The caller's only means of communication was with AT&T High Seas radio operators who were able to save the man's life.

Similar to 911 operators, the AT&T high seas operations staff, composed of three to four FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  licensed operators, fields more than 6,000 calls each month.  when top priority is given to safety communications. In addition, Langley noted there is an increase in calls on holidays such as Mother's Day. WOM may be accessed through a ssb, single side band radio, which may be purchased at any marine equipment dealer. AT&T operators receive the high seas or aircraft radio calls and provide two-way communication Two-way communication is a form of transmission in which both parties involved transmit information. Common forms of two-way communication are:
  • In-person communication
  • Telephone conversations
  • Amateur, CB or FRS radio contacts

, as well as weather broadcasts. Each call costs the sender approximately $5 per minute. In order to place a call from shore to ship, users may dial the AT&T High Seas Operator at 1-800-SEA-CALL.
