AT&T CREATES CHINA BUSINESS UNIT; NAMES WARWICK AS CHAIRMAN AND CEO

NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Reinforcing its commitment to one of the largest and fastest-growing markets of the world, AT&T today created a unit responsible for realizing business opportunities in China.
The new organization, the AT&T China Business Unit, will be based in Beijing, and will be headed by William J. Warwick, now president of AT&T Microelectronics, beginning July 1.
Warwick will be responsible for AT&T's business operations in China, and will have overall corporate planning responsibility in both the United States and China for AT&T's business in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
His title will be chairman and chief executive officer of the AT&T China Business Unit, and he simultaneously will become a senior vice president of AT&T.
Warwick will be replaced by Curtis J. Crawford, currently vice president of AT&T Microelectronics.
A major role of the new unit will be to implement a memorandum of understanding signed by AT&T and China's State Planning Commission on Feb. 23, 1993. The memorandum expresses the willingness of the two partners to jointly explore business opportunities in at least 10 areas, creating a foundation to act jointly on business opportunities to enhance and modernize telecommunications in China.
The 10 areas specifically covered in the memorandum are: 5ESS(R) switching, microelectronics, network management, R&D involving AT&T Bell Laboratories, optical transmission products, wireless communications systems, customer premises equipment, training, systems integration and network service offerings.
Warwick also will carry out planning functions associated with efforts to expand AT&T's business in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
"The AT&T China Business Unit reaffirms AT&T's commitment to the region, and demonstrates in concrete terms our intention to be a significant participant in the continued growth of these vibrant and important economies," said AT&T Vice Chairman Randall L. Tobias.
"Bill Warwick's demonstrated talent and his experience as a leader of business units with extensive activities in Asia make him an excellent choice to oversee the growth of a business with extraordinary potential," Tobias added.
Warwick, 58, has significant experience establishing manufacturing operations and developing customer, supplier and partner relationships in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Thailand and Japan as president of AT&T Microelectronics since 1987, and before that, as president of AT&T Consumer Products.
AT&T Microelectronics designs and manufactures advanced electronic and photonic components and power systems for AT&T and other high- technology firms worldwide. AT&T Consumer Products designs, manufactures, sells and leases communications products for the home.
In Curtis Crawford's present position, he shares CEO responsibilities with Warwick, and oversees the company's Connector, Interconnect, Lightwave and Power business units as well as the global sales force. Crawford, 45, has extensive experience in the computer industry, having held a variety of sales, marketing and executive management positions at IBM before joining AT&T Computer Systems in 1988.
