AT&T CLASSIC NOTEBOOK: MORGAN LOSES GRIP ON LEAD.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Dr. Gil Morgan Gilmer Bryan Morgan II, OD (born September 25 1946) is an American professional golfer.

Morgan was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He graduated from East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma in 1968.

He enjoyed one of the more illustrious careers in the history of U.S. Amateur golf before turning pro in 1994 when he became a member of the Champions Tour. , wound up shooting in the 60s for the 18th time in 30 starts in the event, called the SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Classic last year and going by three other names in its 17-year history.

It was called the Ralphs Senior Classic when Morgan won it in 1996 and `97 at Wilshire Country Club and was the SBC Classic in Morgan's third win - at Valencia two years ago.

Despite the cold, the scoring average was two strokes lower than last year's opening round, and this year's field managed eight opening rounds in the 60s compared to just one in last year's opener.

--How wild was it? Lanny Wadkins navigated 6,940-yard Valencia with five birdies, an eagle, seven pars, four bogeys and a double bogey in a round of 1-under-par 71.

--Names in the game: Tournament leader Adcock finished 43rd in the Champions Tour annual qualifying tournament. Only the top seven finishers are fully exempt. ...

Crenshaw's 4-under 68 was his first round in the 60s at Valencia in 12 scores posted. His previous best there was 70 in 2004. ...

Sigel's opening 68 matched his best score at Valencia, where he has never finished better than 33rd in this tournament.
