AT&T Announces New Contract with Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority; Voice and Data Networking Upgrade to Enhance GCRTA's 911 Emergency Services.

: T) announced today a new voice and data networking contract with the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (officially the GCRTA, but usually referred to as the RTA) is the public transit agency for Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and the surrounding suburbs of Cuyahoga County.  (GCRTA GCRTA Greater Cleveland Regional Transportation Authority ), one of the largest public transportation providers in the United States, servicing 1.4 million people and encompassing 59 municipalities in Cleveland.

Under terms of the three-year contract, AT&T will provide a new Synchronous Optical Network (networking) Synchronous Optical NETwork - (SONET) A broadband networking standard based on point-to-point optical fibre networks. SONET will provide a high-bandwidth "pipe" to support ATM-based services.  (SONET) to increase redundancy and reliability of GCRTA's voice and data network. Additional upgraded services will provide a foundation to support the recent enhancement of GCRTA's 911 emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services' . Together, these services provide a solution that aligns with AT&T's convergence strategy, enabling increased redundancy for GCRTA's voice and data network and additional support for GCRTA's emergency services.

With the adoption of AT&T's services, GCRTA's employees will be better-equipped to support the 52.7 million passenger trips made each year. GCRTA's fleet, which includes 624 buses and 108 train cars, covers a service area of 458 square miles with 1.4 million residents and is operated by 2,753 employees. This project will also help prepare GCRTA to meet the needs of its customers well into the next century.
