AT&T ANNOUNCES NEW LAN CONSOLIDATION PROGRAM.

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1995--AT&T's computer unit has announced a new LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  Consolidation Program that helps companies reduce costs and simplify LAN operations. The program migrates network resources to a Microsoft Windows See Windows.

NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. , Windows NT education, software support and hardware maintenance.

By using AT&T's program, corporations can increase the quality of service provided on a LAN as well as increase the number of users supported on the system, by consolidating network resources of file-print servers to larger and more robust SMP servers.

"Today, less is more," said Rob Howe, AT&T GIS vice president, Worldwide PC Marketing. "By moving files and applications from many single-purpose servers to a few more powerful, scalable multiprocessor machines, such as the AT&T Globalyst S40 PC server running Microsoft Windows NT Server, corporations will be able to cut their cost of LAN ownership."

Migrating to Windows NT Server 3.5 provides a single easy-to-use operating environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system.  designed to support high-performance file/print applications as well as client/server applications.

"AT&T's program to migrate LANs to a Windows NT Server solution helps customers prepare their companies for the future by giving them oth a hardware and software foundation that will grow with their business requirements," said Robert McDowell Robert David McDowell (born April 1 1900) was the Mayor of Maryborough, Queensland from 1939 to 1950.

, vice president, enterprise customer unit at Microsoft Corp. "AT&T is the right company to help with consolidation because it knows how to provide the right mix of expertise, products, people and services to deliver business critical solutions that meet the stringent requirements of IT environments."

The new Globalyst S40 server is an ideal platform for the LAN Consolidation Program. It features multiple Intel(R) Pentium(TM) processors for faster network response and includes sophisticated network management tools that ensure high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  of mission-critical information. In addition, because the Globalyst S40 PC server is a scalable platform, customers can add processors to meet increasing system demands.

The LAN Consolidation Program is available through AT&T GIS' customer-focused teams and value-added reseller A value-added reseller (VAR) is a company that adds some feature(s) to an existing product(s), then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or complete "turn-key" solution.  partners.

"Networking has always been a strategic technology for resellers," said Curt Fisher, vice president, Worldwide Partnership Marketing, AT&T GIS. "Resellers are particularly well-positioned to take advantage of the SMP market growth. The complexity of the SMP equation means there's plenty of opportunity to add value with the products and services that we offer through our flexible program."
