AT&T ANNOUNCES BEST-EVER TPC-C RESULTS ON MEDIUM-SCALE SERVER.

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--November 29, 1994--AT&T Global Information Solutions (GIS) announced record-breaking Transaction Processing Performance Council Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1985 to define transaction processing and database benchmarks and to disseminate objective, verifiable TPC performance data to the industry.  (TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council, San Francisco, CA, www.tpc.org) An organization devoted to benchmarking transaction processing systems. In order to derive the number of transactions that can be processed in a given time frame, TPC benchmarks measure the total performance of ) benchmarking results on the industry's top-selling UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
medium-scale server, the AT&T 3500 XP system. The performance results, which were tested under the rules of the TPC-C A benchmark that measures overall transaction processing performance. See TPC.  benchmark, are the best-ever for a UNIX-based system.

Specifically, the 3500 XP system achieved 2,237.16 transactions per minute (tpmC) at a price/performance of $817 per tpmC. The benchmark was performed using Informix-Online 5.03 on the 3525 XP model using eight Pentium processors. (The system is expandable to 16 processors.)

"The record-breaking benchmark on the 3500 XP server is further evidence of AT&T GIS' continued leadership in performance and price/performance," said Nancy Goguen, vice president of Worldwide Systems Marketing, AT&T Global Information Solutions.

The TPC-C benchmark simulates an order entry environment for a warehouse operation. It has gained industry acceptance since it is considered to be close to "real world" processing. By simulating the activities found in complex OLTP (OnLine Transaction Processing) See transaction processing and OLCP.

application environments, the TPC-C exercises a systems breadth of components associated with such environments.

AT&T recently performed the best-ever SYBASE SQL server Sybase SQL Server - Adaptive Server Enterprise  10 benchmark on a deskside 4-CPU 3455 XP server, significantly surpassing competitive systems tested by the TPC-C benchmark, achieving 1,479.43 tpmC with a price/performance ratio In economics and engineering, the price/performance ratio refers to a product's ability to deliver performance, of any sort, for its price. For instance, if you have a whole day to travel 100 km, spending $50 to do the journey in two hours is a better price/performance ratio than  of $746 per tpm-C. This benchmark still stands as the best-ever price/performance of any system as well as the best benchmark performance ever achieved using Sybase.

The XP series from AT&T Global Information Solutions employs a set of new technology features which provide unmatched scalability on the Symmetric Multiprocessing See SMP.

(parallel) symmetric multiprocessing - (SMP) Two or more similar processors connected via a high-bandwidth link and managed by one operating system, where each processor has equal access to I/O devices.
and Massively Parallel See MPP.  Processing Systems of AT&T. Current customers benefit with unmatched investment protection since existing 3450, 3500 and 3600 systems can be upgraded to the XP technology, providing as much as four times the original performance of the systems. The XP series will be generally available in January.

IDC STUDY

In an IDC study on UNIX medium-scale systems sold in 1993(a), AT&T was ahead of all competitors with a 14.4% share of sales revenue. Commenting on the growth, IDC stated "The Medium-scale UNIX Systems Market grew nearly 47% worldwide from 1992 - 1993, much higher than our last year's forecast. Much of this increase was driven by the extremely high growth rates Growth Rates

The compounded annualized rate of growth of a company's revenues, earnings, dividends, or other figures.

Notes:
Remember, historically high growth rates don't always mean a high rate of growth looking into the future.
(each over 150%) of two leading suppliers -AT&T/GIS and Hewlett-Packard."

"The medium-scale market space, represented by the IDC data, is one where we have clearly had a great deal of success," said Goguen. "The data accurately represents the fact that customers are turning to AT&T to perform their business critical applications. It is the combination of performance, investment protection, price/performance and reliability which have distinguished the 3500 series in this marketplace."

Medium-scale UNIX servers are most often used at the corporate or regional level of business. It is at this level where typically the most business critical applications are performed. Business critical applications are those operations that must be performed for a business to remain in business. Examples include a range of applications from accounting, payroll, and decision support to such mission critical operations as financial transactions, airline ticketing and 911 emergency dispatch.
