AT&T AND SBA TEAM UP FOR BUSINESS RECOVERY MONTH
MIAMI, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T and the Small Business

Administration announced today that they have combined forces to provide an array of free services for businesses affected by Hurricane Andrew throughout the month of October, which has been designated as Business Recovery Month.
"The Florida Department of Commerce is delighted to support Dade County's Business Recovery Month initiative," said secretary of Commerce, Greg Farmer. "In the past these businesses have shown their resilience, perseverance and tenacity," Farmer continued. "I have every confidence that once again, they will rise to the challenge."
SBA/AT&T resource centers are located throughout Dade County to help business owners with disaster loan applications and telecommunications counseling and services for as long as needed.
In addition, Florida Small Business Development Centers are providing counselors at many of the centers to offer in-depth business counseling such as rewriting of business plans.
According to the SBA, businesses typically begin their road to recovery 30-60 days after a natural disaster.
"First they get a home -- then they have to get an income. So they just pull themselves up by the bootstraps and start again" said Tom Fisher, assistant area director for SBA's Atlanta disaster area office. "I think the disaster makes them better business people in the end."
A line of communication is usually the most important factor to any business. AT&T has representatives available to offer telecommunications and marketing assistance. For example, AT&T has been lending single line telephones to any area business. The company will supply one telephone for each business line a company has in operation. As long as a business's telephone lines are functioning, single line telephone sets will operate even when a company's multi-line equipment is out of commission, due to a lack of electric power.
"Business owners caught in the storm are now caught up in economic recovery," said Barbara Jenkins, AT&T Branch Manager, South Florida. "Telecommunications are key in rebuilding one's business."
AT&T is also installing long distance service free of charge if AT&T customers need installation at both a temporary business location and then again in a permanent location. The AT&T representatives also can provide marketing tools essential to a business affected by the storm. A typical small operation that attracted a steady flow of clients, may now for the first time need to consider advertising, 800 lines, and telemarketing.
