AT&T AND LEARONAL IN JOINT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT FOR SAFER SPRAY SOLDER MASK

AT&T AND LEARONAL IN JOINT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT
 FOR SAFER SPRAY SOLDER MASK
BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T Microelectronics and LeaRonal, Inc. (NYSE: LRI) have signed a technology transfer and joint development agreement for a spray solder mask to incorporate many necessary and desirable features in a product that is safer for the environment.
Solder masks are used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards (PCBs). The proposed product will be one part (consistent, with no mixing necessary); fully aqueous (no solvents which require venting or incineration); photoimageable (important for high density); and electrostatic (to coat the board and conductors evenly.)
Under the agreement, AT&T will transfer by license its proprietary Rubber Modified epoxy Acrylate (RMA) technology, which it uses in its Photo-Definable Dielectric (PDD) solder mask, to LeaRonal. LeaRonal will assess RMA formulations as candidates for electrostatic spray, and develop improvements for AT&T to evaluate at its Richmond Works and other PCB assembly locations. The resulting formulation will be manufactured by LeaRonal and sold to AT&T at favorable prices. Additionally, LeaRonal will have sole responsibility for promoting and marketing the resulting solder mask products domestically and internationally, and may appoint Tokyo Ohka Kogyo, a Japanese company, as sole manufacturer and distributor for Japan. For its contributions, AT&T will receive a share of sales revenues.
Although the proposed solder mask formulation is intended to support electrostatic spray application, all parties expect that, with modifications, a variation of this product will be usable in the screen and curtain coating systems prevalent today. This added flexibility allows access to PCB manufacturers who have invested in other types of coating equipment.
AT&T Microelectronics offers a full line of high-performance components and electronic systems to original equipment manufacturers. Included in the product line are application specific integrated circuits, communication devices, graphics and speech processors, analog integrated components and linear arrays, interconnect products, lightwave products, and power supplies.
LeaRonal, Inc. is a specialty chemical company which supplies imaging and plating chemicals and processes worldwide. Headquartered in New York and traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the company is a multinational operation with subsidiary offices located in the U.S., England, Switzerland, Germany, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Italy and Korea.
Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd. is a Japanese multinational corporation which supplies imaging chemistry to the semiconductor and printed circuit industries, and has been ranked as one of the top 50 best managed public Japanese companies by the Nikkei Dow.
