AT&T'S FACTORIES SURPASS ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS

PHILADELPHIA, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T's factories are ahead of schedule on all three of the company's environmental goals for manufacturing.
AT&T (NYSE: T) has 44 majority-owned factories in 13 countries -- 20 outside the United States -- and closely monitors their environmental performance. Two of those are AT&T Microelectronics factories, in Allentown and Reading, Pa.
By year-end 1992, AT&T reduced manufacturing waste 49 percent, or 57 million pounds from 1987 levels -- double the goal the company set for itself. AT&T had vowed to reduce manufacturing waste 25 percent by 1994.
AT&T reduced reportable toxic air emissions 81 percent from 1987 levels -- some 9.3 million pounds -- well on the way to meeting its 1995 commitment of 95 percent.
By year-end 1992, AT&T's factories had reduced CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) emissions 86 percent -- a total of 2.5 million pounds -- from the base year of 1986.
"We're very pleased with these results," said David R. Chittick, AT&T Environment & Safety Engineering vice president. "We have done what many considered impossible just a few short years ago, and our employees deserve all the credit in the world."
