ASU panel recommends dropping Indians mascot.


The Arkansas State University's Mascot Review Committee unanimously adopted a resolution last week to officially retire the name Indians and drop all the Native American imagery connected with its athletic program.

When the board takes that action, the university will be removed from the non-compliance list of colleges and universities that are part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

 had adopted a policy against using Native American mascots and said members who used such imagery would be barred from NCAA post-season championship events.

To continue its participation in the NCAA, ASU was forced to change. The review committee, chaired by Jim Pickens, did not deal with the selection of a new name and mascot for the school's athletic teams at its meeting.
