ASU and Motorola Name Professor to Expand Links to Hispanic Community; Miguel Montiel First Motorola Presidential Professor of Community Revitalization.

:MOT) announced the appointment of Miguel Montiel as the first Motorola Presidential Professor in Community Revitalization, a leadership position designed to foster applied interdisciplinary programs and partnerships in the Chicano and Latino communities.

The new presidential professorship resides in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies (CCS (1) (Common Channel Signaling) A communications system in which one channel is used for signaling and different channels are used for voice/data transmission. Signaling System 7 (SS7) is a CCS system, also known as CCS7. See SS7. ) at ASU.

Chicana and Chicano Studies focuses on the experiences, culture, artistic endeavors, and current status of people of Mexican descent living in the United States and promotes the development of professions and services to the community based on an understanding of the humanities, social sciences and the arts.

"Motorola's support of Chicana and Chicano studies provides real-world benefit to the local Latino and Chicano communities and increases our understanding of the wonderful heritage," said Cathy McKee, corporate vice president and director of Strategic Business Services at Motorola Systems Solutions Group.

"Miguel Montiel's appointment as the presidential professor is a part of our evolving relationship and outreach into the communities that bring rich and valuable culture into our everyday lives."

Currently, he is evaluating a Welfare Reform community action project for the Arizona Community Action Agency funded by the prestigious Kellogg Foundation. He consults on several initiatives through the Arizona Prevention Resource Center (APRC APRC Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (Gambia)

), and is working on a book on "best practices" aimed at improving the delivery of state practices by linking theory and research to practice.

His early work on the Chicano family has been cited in virtually every article on the Chicano family written over the last twenty years.

Montiel's work has been in collaboration with others, and much of it devoted to building minority-oriented programs. These experiences are documented in a co-authored book entitled Debatable Diversity: Critical Dialogues on Changes in American Universities (1998).

In 1974 Montiel moved to ASU where he has since held academic assignments in the School of Social Work, the Honors College and the School of Public Affairs. He also taught at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in 1983. From 1984 to 1987 he served as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs.
