``The competition for coaches of Bruce's caliber is intense,'' Coor said. ``And so I am delighted that Kevin White has taken steps to ensure that coach Snyder will continue to lead the Sun Devil program in the years ahead. The football team has energized the entire university with its dramatic performances this year.''

White called Snyder ``the consummate professional. He has led this football program with dignity and class over the past five years. He is highly respected around the country and is clearly one of the very best coaches in the country.''

``I'm obviously very pleased,'' Snyder said. ``Everybody has been very good to me. I don't think we've reached our potential yet.

``There's a lot of work to be done, but the general feeling that I have is that we're certainly going in the right direction, not only in football but the parts around it.

``I appreciate the people who have had faith in me during some tough times, and now we're going to carry it forward.''

Snyder praised the work of White during contract negotiations.

``Kevin provided really strong leadership in this whole deal,'' Snyder said. ``I think he wants the best for the university, and I think he wants the best for Bruce Snyder, and that's a real nice combination.

``This shows to me that our wagons are tied together at the university, and I appreciate that. Now, it's a long-term deal.''

Snyder said he is unsure how long he wants to remain in coaching beyond the five years of his contract.

But certainly, the next five years are really directed in my mind.''

Going pro: Clemson defensive end Trevor Pryce said he will bypass his senior year and enter the NFL draft. The 6-foot-5, 280-pounder said he's been told he could be among the top five to 10 picks.

Pryce played two years at Michigan before transferring to Clemson in 1995. He set a school speed record for defensive linemen with a time of 4.74 in the 40 last February.

Clemson finished its season with a 10-7 loss to Louisiana State in the Peach Bowl on Saturday.

Injury report: The latest victim of North Carolina's flu bug is place-kicker Josh McGee.

Coach Mack Brown said the redshirt freshman, who was 9 for 17 on field goals and 36 for 38 on extra points in 1996, was unable to get out of bed Tuesday and participate in the team's walk-through at Gator Bowl Stadium Gator Bowl Stadium was a football and soccer stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. It was home to the World Football League's Jacksonville Sharks in 1974 and the Jacksonville Express in 1975. .

If McGee is unable to perform against West Virginia today, Brown said senior Chris Welch will handle the kicking chores. Welch has kicked two extra points this year and has one career field goal - a 48-yarder against N.C. State last season.

West Virginia may have to go without starting defensive end Bob Baum, who was third in the Big East Conference with six sacks.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound junior was expected to be released from a local hospital Tuesday after being admitted for a recurring kidney problem. He is doubtful for the game.
