A plan to let Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
students study the stars through an Australian observatory telescope via computer got a jump-start with $40,000 in state aid.

Assemblyman George Runner, R-Lancaster, presented a $40,000 check Friday to officials of the Palmdale School District The Palmdale School District is a school district that serves a major part of the city of Palmdale, California (USA).

The Palmdale School District was first formed in 1888. Approximately 28,000 students are enrolled in the Palmdale School District.
, which is spearheading the plan.

``I believe this is one of the most avant garde project that's happening in the state of California,'' Runner told onlookers who included state Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight, R-Palmdale, who helped get the state funds. ``We are truly setting up a program that is beyond comparison.''

The Computer Linked American Southern Sky telescope project, estimated to cost about $300,000 to start, still needs funds from other contributors. The Palmdale Education Foundation, the Antelope Valley Education Foundation and the Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
 have shown interest in participating.

``It's a start,'' said project coordinator John Shobbrook, director of the Palmdale School District planetarium planetarium, optical device used to project a representation of the heavens onto a domed ceiling; the term also designates the building that houses such a device. A modern planetarium consists of as many as 150 motor-driven projectors mounted on an axis. , who is leaving the Antelope Valley to work at the Australian observatory that would be linked to local schools.

Antelope Valley youngsters would be able to use a computer link to control the telescope and examine stars and planets visible over the Southern Hemisphere. Proponents said the benefit of linking up with the Mount Stromlo Observatory Mount Stromlo Observatory, astronomical observatory located on Mt. Stromlo, near Canberra, Australia. Established in 1924 (14 years after the first telescope was erected there), it has been operated by the Australian National Univ. since 1957.  in Canberra is that the skies are dark over Australia when valley children are in school.

``I think it brings forward something that's very important in the Antelope Valley: science,'' Palmdale superintendent Nancy Smith said. ``And space science especially is something that's going to be close to a lot of the jobs that are available to these children.''
