ASTACIO AND PARK START SLOWLY\ATLANTA 7, DODGERS 3.

Byline: Tim Brown Timothy Donell Brown (born July 22, 1966) is a retired wide receiver, who played in the National Football League. He spent sixteen years with the Oakland Raiders, during which he established himself as one of the League's most prolific wide receivers.  Daily News Staff Writer

The competition for one of the Dodgers' few unsettled positions began Monday afternoon and the results were mixed. That is, Pedro Astacio Pedro Julio Astacio (born November 28, 1969 in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic) is a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1992- part of 1997), Colorado Rockies (part of 1997- part of 2001), Houston Astros (part of 2001), New York Mets  and Chan Ho Park, candidates for the starting rotation, were unimpressive against the Atlanta Braves The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Braves are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. From to the present, the Braves have played in Turner Field. , yet both claimed to be pleased.

Astacio, who started last season in the rotation and finished it in the bullpen, allowed five hits, three walks and three runs in three innings, despite two double plays behind him.

Park, whose major-league debut was against Atlanta nearly two years ago, allowed two hits, a walk and three well-hit balls into a fierce wind blowing in from left field.

Of course, it's barely March. But neither one came in like a lion.

"It's hard to evaluate the first or second time out," Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda

said after the Braves' 7-3 victory.

Astacio admitted that it felt both good and strange to start a game again. In those initial three innings, he faced 15 batters, more than enough to become comfortable again.

"Sometimes I got the ball a little up," he said. "I felt good. I'm confident."

After an admittedly ragged intrasquad outing, Park made some improvement against the Braves, though he said he was "lucky" that several balls were hit right at his outfielders.

"I was a little nervous because of the intrasquad game," Park said. "Now I feel confident and better."

Park was reminded of his debut on April 8, 1994, and said it crossed his mind before pitching against the Braves for the first time since.

"I remember that time," he said. "Two walks and then (Terry) Pendleton doubled for two runs.

"Today, yeah, I'm happy. I feel good. I want to pitch more."

At first glance: In the absence of Eric Karros
Eric Peter Karros (born November 4, 1967 in Hackensack, New Jersey) is a former American baseball player who played in Major League Baseball from 1991-2004. Karros attended UCLA, where he receieved a degree in economics. Karros played his first MLB game on September 1, 1991.
, whose hamstring needs more time to heal, Mike Piazza Michael Joseph Piazza (born September 4, 1968 in Norristown, Pennsylvania) is an American Major League Baseball player who currently plays for the Oakland Athletics. He began his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played for the Florida Marlins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres  started at first base against the Braves. Piazza handled the news as any full-time catcher would, with trepidation and a sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"

"I'm not going out there expecting to do too much," he said. "I just want to go out and stop the ball. If I embarrass myself I'll forget this game as soon as possible. I'm thinking, expect the best, prepare for the worst."

Lasorda said he wanted to get at-bats for Piazza, though Piazza played only 3-1/2 innings and had two at-bats. Piazza laughed when reminded of the argument that he ought to learn a new position in order to extend his career. He said he might consider getting out from behind the plate in another five or six years.

Incidentally, Piazza had no problems at first base. He played an inning at first base in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  during his rookie season and, of course, entered the organization as a first baseman.

Lasorda wanted none of the talk about a future position change for Piazza, a 62nd-round pick in the 1988 draft.

"He's a catcher," Lasorda said. "When he played first base nobody wanted him."

, brought to camp by the Dodgers in the Jose Offerman trade, tweaked his right knee during an inning's work on Monday. A left-hander with a chance to land a job in the bullpen, Brewer has had tendinitis in both knees since high school, when he played basketball. He said his knee was fine until just before the game, when it became sore while running. It locked up in the seventh inning while he fielded a comebacker.

Brewer said he will pitch again on Thursday, his next scheduled day.
