AST commits support for Novell Netware SMP with Industry-Standard Manhattan Servers.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1995--Stepping up to the challenge of meeting increased throughput and greater system performance needs in growing network environments, AST (AST Computer, Irvine, CA) A PC manufacturer founded in 1980 by Albert Wong, Safi Quershey and Tom Yuen (A, S and T). It offered a complete line of PCs that sold through its dealer channel.  Computer (NASDAQ NASDAQ

:ASTA) Thursday announced full support for Novell(r) NetWare(r) SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture in which multiple CPUs, residing in one cabinet, share the same memory. SMP systems provide scalability. As business increases, additional CPUs can be added to absorb the increased transaction volume. .

Symmetric multiprocessing See SMP.

(parallel) symmetric multiprocessing - (SMP) Two or more similar processors connected via a high-bandwidth link and managed by one operating system, where each processor has equal access to I/O devices.
(SMP) is the latest addition to the NetWare 4 network operating system An operating system that is designed for network use. Normally, it is a complete operating system with file, task and job management; however, with some earlier products, it was a separate component that ran under the OS; for example, LAN Server required OS/2, and LANtastic required DOS.  that provides scalability for application services See ASP and Web services. .

With the first customer shipment of its Manhattan P and V series servers in October of last year, AST targeted the ever-growing needs with highly scalable hardware designed to the industry-standard multiprocessing specification (MPS1.1).

"Anyone who has purchased a Manhattan P or V server can be assured that with dual processors and a software upgrade for NetWare SMP An extension to NetWare 4 that added SMP support. NLMs have to be written for SMP to take advantage of it. In NetWare 5, the Multiprocessor Kernel (MPK) natively supports SMP and can run an SMP-based NLM even if only one processor is used. , they will be able to run NetWare SMP-aware applications," said Chet Pribonic, AST's vice president, products division.

By the end of the year AST expects to offer its reseller customers a full upgrade package.

AST's Manhattan servers are highly scalable and work in sync with NetWare SMP as customers add users and move to more resource-intensive applications. These applications include complex databases, transaction-oriented processes and groupware applications.

To deliver this level of scalability and performance, AST has equipped its Manhattan servers with dual processing capability, PCI bus PCI bus - Peripheral Component Interconnect  and high performance disk arrays.

The Manhattan P servers also feature error correcting code (ECC (1) (Error-Correcting Code) A type of memory that corrects errors on the fly. See ECC memory.

(2) (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) A public key cryptography method that provides fast decryption and digital signature processing.
) memory to fix memory problems on the fly, fast SCSI-II "hot swappable See hot swap. " hard drives to replace drives while the system is running, and RAID controllers for redundancy to further ensure maximum uptime.

This week AST showcased its latest server design in a technology demonstration at Networld+Interop, a leading computer industry trade show. The server was running Intel's next-generation Pentium(r) Pro microprocessor.

"AST has again met industry standards with the SMP spec 1.1 designed in," said Pribonic. "Customers can look for new AST-designed Manhattans in the first calendar quarter of the new year equipped with Pentium Pro The sixth generation of the Intel x86 family of CPU chips. The term may refer to the chip or to a PC that uses it. Introduced in 1995 as the successor to the Pentium, models from 150 MHz to 200 MHz were released.  to run their NetWare SMP networks," he added.

AST servers are available through the reseller channel. Estimated sales prices for the Manhattan V and P range from $3,150 to $14,100.

All AST servers are covered by a three-year, on-site warranty and optional four-hour response program called Guardian Caresm. AST also has a toll-free "hot" line, AST InfoFax fax-back service, AST On-line! bulletin board, and a forum on CompuServe(r) and Prodigy(r) online services. All provide technical information and assistance.
