ASSOCIATION NEWS.The National Corn Growers Association, St. Louis, and Archer Daniels Midland, Decatur, Ill., begin a new two-year research project partnership that is expected to expand corn markets. The goal of the research is to create a commercial manufacturing process that converts corn fiber or bran bran (bran) the meal derived from the outer covering of a cereal grain; a source of dietary fiber. bran (br n)n. into higher-valued products. These would include chemical feedstocks, such as ethylene glycol ethylene glycol polyethylene glycol see under P. gly·col (gl ![]() kôl , -k: see glycol. and propylene glycol for antifreeze antifreeze, substance added to a solvent to lower its freezing point. The solution formed is called an antifreeze mixture. Antifreeze is typically added to water in the cooling system of an internal-combustion engine so that it may be cooled below the freezing point of pure water (32°F; or 0°C;) without freezing., and fuels such as ethanol. Corn fiber or bran is an abundant by-product of the wet milling industry and is used as low-priced feed. The American Soybean Association, St. Louis, has published Soybean Management and the Land: A Best Management Handbook for Growers. The book was designed as an easy resource for soybean growers who want to voluntarily assess the environmental and conservation needs of their farms. ASA developed the book in cooperation with the USDA National Resource Conservation Service and the Farm* A *Syst Program. The handbook is free to all ASA members who request a copy; cost for nonmembers is $36. |
