CAMARILLO - With a 13-foot high, 1,000-pound gas pump nicknamed ``Ethyl'' by his side, Assemblyman Tony Strickland renewed his fight Monday to repeal the state's tax on gasoline sales.

It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. ,'' said Strickland. ``That's double-taxing, and it's wrong.

``We have to look at who the high gas costs really affect. They affect working folks, senior citizens on fixed incomes and college students,'' he said.

``People in Sacramento want to make this a party issue,'' Strickland said. ``Here in California we have some of the highest gas prices in the nation, and it shouldn't be happening - especially with a megabillion-dollar surplus. I told my colleagues this issue is not going to die.''

Earlier this year, Strickland appeared at gas stations in Thousand Oaks, Stockton, Salinas Salinas, city, United States

At some of the stations, he gave customers 15 cents for every gallon they purchased. He estimated he's given away between $600 and $1,000 of his own money.

``I'm committed to this, and I'm putting my money where my mouth is,'' Strickland said.

Joining Strickland in his efforts is Ed Preola, president of the National Taxpayers Union National Taxpayers Union (NTU) is a pro-taxpayers advocacy organization in the United States, founded in 1969 by James Dale Davidson. It is closely affiliated with a non-profit foundation, the National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF).  and executive director of Citizens Against the Fuel Tax.

``Gas prices across the country in the last decade have dramatically increased,'' Preola said. ``And with the spike in prices at the beginning of this year consumers are beginning to pay attention.

``Gas prices are up 50 percent over the same time last year and it's affecting vacations and cutting into people's ability to make a living, including the pizza delivery person or the person who delivers flowers.''
