 from Lancaster, face a tough battle in November for the state's 36th Assembly District, a Republican stronghold in which George Runner George C. Runner, Jr. (born March 25 1952 in Scotia, New York) is a Republican California State Senator, who represents the 17th Senate District, which includes portions of Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County and Ventura County. , R-Lancaster, will seek re-election.

Runner acknowledged he has an advantage in the district. But he added that he plans to address issues he sees as significant for the area.

``We are glad we're in a district with the registration we have,'' Runner said. ``But any race we take seriously. It's good to have opponents so we can talk about the issues.''

Calderon, who is new to politics and the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , declined to talk about specific issues until she has had time to develop her platform. Calderon, an admitting manager at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center Olive View-UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located in the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, USA. The hospital was founded on October 27, 1920, and is funded by Los Angeles County [1]. , said she moved to Saugus from Pacoima four years ago so that her nephew could attend better schools.

Calderon, who is single and does not have children, provides housing to her sister's family.

``I love it in Santa Clarita,'' Calderon said. ``I should have moved here a long time ago.''

The 52-year-old candidate said she has always had an interest in running for office.

``When I was in Pacoima and going to school, it was something I wanted to do,'' Calderon said. ``I just never got around to it.''

Though Calderon is new to politics, she knows the challenge she faces running in an area where Democrats from the area traditionally do not win.

``The 36th District has been a Republican stronghold since its inception,'' Calderon said. ``Past Democratic candidates have been unable to unite the Democratic voters. I want to unify 1. (database, product) Unify - A relational database produced by Unify Corporation.
