ASSAULT ON 'IMPOSTOR' BARNEY ALARMS FANS; COMPANY REASSURES PARENTS AND CHILDREN

& ALLEN, Texas, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials of Allen-based The

Lyons Group, creator of Barney(TM), the purple dinosaur, issued a

statement reassuring parents and young children that Barney is alive and well in Allen, and working on the next series of PBS television shows. Concerned phone calls poured into company headquarters following a report that Barney had been assaulted at an appearance at a Kmart store in Galveston, Texas.
Company officials pointed out that the appearance at Kmart was not, in fact, Barney but was an unauthorized costumed appearance and that The Lyons Group does not encourage or approve of such appearances, which are not legal under federal law. Barney is a trademarked and copyrighted figure.
"The real Barney is just fine and asked me to thank everyone for their calls and concern," said Beth Ryan, a company spokeswoman. "It makes him feel wonderful to know people care as much about him as he does about them."
The Lyons Group, production company for all Barney programming, is a division of RCL Enterprises Inc. (formerly DLM Inc.), a non-public holding company.
