``It's terribly sad, terribly sad,'' Newbold said. ``But she's in fair condition, so that's the good news.''

Walters was approached about 1:15 p.m. as she walked from the Canterbury Village condominiums on Lyons Avenue through a rear alley to the Albertson's shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The thief grabbed her handbag in the crook of her arm and Walters tried to hold on, a deputy said. The man knocked her down and ran off with the bag.

The purse held about $75 in cash and some credit cards.

While Walters was being treated at the hospital, sheriff's deputies were searching the area for witnesses and for the purse.
