ASNA Upgrades Its Popular AVR Compiler; ASNA Visual RPG 4.1 Classic for COM Enables COM-to-.NET Conversion as Well as a Multi-Document Interface Similar to Visual Studio.SAN ANTONIO San Antonio (săn ăntō`nēō, əntōn`), city (1990 pop. 935,933), seat of Bexar co., S central Tex., at the source of the San Antonio River; inc. 1837. -- ASNA ASNA Amalgamated Software of North America ASNA Architecture and Services of Network Applications ASNA Alabama State Nurses Association ASNA Actuarial Students National Association (Canada) ASNA Arctic Slope Native Association (Amalgamated a·mal·ga·mate v. a·mal·ga·mat·ed, a·mal·ga·mat·ing, a·mal·ga·mates v.tr. 1. Software of North America) today announced availability of its ASNA Visual RPG (Report Program Generator) One of the first program generators designed for business reports, introduced in 1964 by IBM. In 1970, RPG II added enhancements that made it a mainstay programming language for business applications on IBM's System/3x midrange computers. 4.1 Classic for COM (1) (Computer Output Microfilm) Creating microfilm or microfiche from the computer. A COM machine receives print-image output from the computer either online or via tape or disk and creates a film image of each page. , an upgraded follow-on to its original, hugely successful ASNA Visual RPG (AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) See voltage regulator. ) compiler. The new version, which is available this month, includes the .NET Upgrade Assistant, a feature designed to allow developers to easily convert COM-based AVR applications to ASNA Visual RPG for .NET. In addition to the .NET Upgrade Assistant, AVR 4.1 features a new, multiple-document interface with docking windows that has similarities to Microsoft's Visual Studio(R) interface. "This is an important evolution for this product," said Anne Ferguson, president of ASNA. "AVR Classic developers need the best, most reliable means of converting thousands of lines of code The statements and instructions that a programmer writes when creating a program. One line of this "source code" may generate one machine instruction or several depending on the programming language. A line of code in assembly language is typically turned into one machine instruction. into .NET environments, and AVR 4.1 Classic for COM goes another step to provide the best available solution for doing so." Designed for converting Microsoft Windows(R)-based AVR programs, the compiler's Upgrade Assistant generates AVR for .NET projects using an AVR 4.1 project as its input. The actual conversion facility packaged with AVR 4.1 is .NET-based. The Upgrade Assistant helps convert COM-based class libraries to .NET-based class libraries, and although the .NET Web development model is so dramatically different from the COM model, the conversion of the business logic to .NET aids in minimizing the amount of manual conversion work required to move to the .NET Web application model. When using the .NET Upgrade Assistant, developers should keep in mind the following: --Wherever possible, the underlying program logic (with either AVR 4.1 fixed or free-form syntax) is converted to the ASNA Visual RPG for .NET syntax. --Included are numerous examples to illustrate how to handle code that cannot be converted directly, such as facilities that do not map exactly to .NET (e.g., using the COM-based File System Object). --Intrinsic AVR Windows controls are converted to their .NET equivalents (i.e., AVR Frame control is converted to .NET GroupBox control). For reasons stated above, no conversion is attempted for the browser-based user interface. --Most third-party ActiveX controls do not have corresponding similarly constructed .NET controls to convert into, although the Upgrade Assistant will convert many of the FarPoint Tab Pro control's features into the .NET Windows TabControl. However, many COM controls will also work with AVR for .NET through Interop. The AVR 4.1 upgrade is available at no cost to customers with ongoing AVR 3.5 or 4.0 active maintenance agreements. ASNA is extending special one-time pricing for customers without a current maintenance agreement and those customers may contact their ASNA representative for more information.
