ASML Expands Korean Customer Base With First Order from Hyundai for Greater than NLG 340 Million -- US$170 Million; Hyundai to Install ASML's Most Advanced Deep UV and i-line Steppers at New Wafer Fabs in Korea and Scotland.

:ASMLF), the world's fastest growing supplier of microlithography systems used in semiconductor manufacturing, has received its first order from Hyundai Electronics Industries Co. Ltd.

The purchase agreement for multiple systems of ASML's most advanced deep UV and i-line steppers represents the largest single order ever placed by the Korean semiconductor manufacturer.

The order, valued at more than NLG NLG

340 million (US$170 million), includes PAS 5500/300B deep UV steppers and PAS 5500/200B i-line systems that will be installed at Hyundai's recently completed wafer fabrication facilities in Inchon, Korea, and Dunfermline, Scotland. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year.

Prior to placing the order, Hyundai conducted an extensive six-month evaluation of the steppers in Korea, and found that it could improve the productivity of its lithography processes for DRAMs using ASML's systems.

"Our benchmark testing of ASML's steppers confirmed not only a superior combination of resolution, overlay and throughput, but also that their process flexibility and reliability are well suited to meet our needs for large scale production of advanced memory devices," said Mr. S. K. Yoon, Hyundai's purchasing director.

"In addition to expanding our Korean customer base, Hyundai's order gives us the opportunity to apply our expertise in working with customers' global operations -- in this case, fabs in both Korea and Scotland," said Douglas Marsh, ASML's vice president of worldwide sales.

The PAS 5500/200B i-line stepper, specified for 0.35-micron resolution, uses a 3.0-kilowatt compact arc lamp, enabling it to achieve throughputs of ninety or more 200 mm wafers per hour. Both steppers incorporate variable numerical apertures, allowing operators to select the optimal resolution and depth of focus for each job and process layer. The systems also use ASML's automated AERIAL(TM) illuminator illuminator (light box),
