Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), a leading global integrated circuit supplier to the computer and communications market, has received the first 193 nm Step & Scan lithography system manufactured by ASM Lithography (ASML), the new PAS 5500/900.

This advanced lithography tool -- the industry's first production-worthy, full-field 193 nm Step & Scan system with a large imaging area of 26 mm x 33 mm -- will be installed in AMD's Submicron Development Center (SDC) in Sunnyvale, Calif.

AMD will use the PAS 5500/900 system in deep submicron process development for its next-generation microprocessor and flash memory ICs, according to Dr. David Kyser, director of advanced process development for AMD.

ASML's new PAS 5500/900 193 nm lithography tool, announced in September 1998, incorporates the company's production-proven Step & Scan architecture and features a numerical aperture (NA) that is adjustable from 0.45 to 0.6. The system meets the timeline set forth in the Semiconductor Industry Association's (SIA) Technology Roadmap for lithography equipment needed to produce advanced 1-gigabit and 4-gigabit DRAMs and gigahertz-speed logic devices.
